We subdivide Ballroom Dancing into "Standard" (AKA Modern Ballroom), and "Latin American" (or "Latin and American"). The two disciplines are not particularly related to each other, have completely different rhythms and techniques (and even clothing and footwear at competitive levels), but somehow they have become lumped together.
Standard comprises five dances:
- Waltz
- Slow Foxtrot
- Tango
- Quickstep
- Viennese Waltz
Latin American comprises five more dances (Jive being the American contribution):
- Cuban Rumba
- Cha Cha Cha
- Samba
- Jive
- Paso Doblé
